Kids in the Kitchen


Kids in the Kitchen provides lessons and demonstrations in preparing healthy meals and snacks that are both tasty and affordable, as well as encouraging children to exercise as a part of a healthy lifestyle.

Junior League of Pensacola’s Community Focus is Children’s Health and Wellness. Through our members’ volunteer efforts and programs like Kids in the Kitchen, the Junior League aims to help combat the troubling issue of childhood obesity and its impact on the Pensacola Bay Area.

Did you know…

  • An estimated 16 percent of adolescents ages 6-19 are obese?
  • More than 10 percent of preschool age children are overweight?
  • According to the Center for Disease Control, the percentage of overweight children aged 6-11 has almost doubled since the early 1980s!
  • According to surveys of overweight/obese children and teens:
    • 60 percent of overweight children already have one risk factor for heart disease,
    • 85 percent of children diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are obese,
    • 25 percent of overweight children are already showing early signs of type 2 diabetes, a
    • Approximately 20 percent of newly diagnosed cases of childhood diabetes are type 2, associated with obesity. This figure is up from 4 percent in 1990.
  • Overweight children miss more school than those of a healthy weight.
  • Obesity in teens leads to negative body image, low self-esteem, and poor academic performance in school.

Educating both children and their families is the key to alleviating this growing problem. TheJunior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen (KITK) initiative aims to make an impact in this area by educating the public at the grassroots level. Kids in the Kitchen programs provide lessons and demonstrations related to preparation of healthy meals and snacks that are both tasty and affordable, as well as encouraging children to exercise as a part of a healthy lifestyle.
